Camper trailer purchase advise.

Can't argue the economics of it. You cant experience camping in a motel. In a motel, somebody was F'n in the bed you have to sleep in the day before. Good chance they are forigners transporting a few bed bug in the luggage. The mini bar has been tampered with. The AC has legionaries bacteria. The maids POS boyfriend steels your laptop. Toilet is stopped up with drug parafanalia, used condoms under the furniture, the couple next door are fussn and fighting all night, flesh eating fungus in the hot tub, and the # 1 thing motels have going for em, my dog aint welcome

I definitely asked the right group. I thought about renting one to try. My Wife’s pushing the idea, I never thought she would be open to the idea.
Thank you all

Rent.

People rent their campers out like air B&B. You can rent a nice unit for about 100 bucks per day.

When we sold ours in January I totally wanted to go the rent route but my wife insisted we have our own camper. Our new toy hauler was 26k after tax. We bought it in January. So far we have slept in in 4 nights total.

Total waste of money.

I wasn’t going to invest that much, but I am afraid of the same thing. I still have to store it on our land or a yard. There will be insurance and Maintainance. I need to show my Wife all these words of experience.
Thanks.

If it's just the two of you I second the scamp/cassita route. The fiberglass campers are lite and well made. They last a long time and hold value.
Some older ones have low ceilings though so if your tall might be no good

Don't buy anything with water damage! Normal campers are prone to leaks.
Slides are nice but add weight and are another common failure point

I bought my 2006 27' bunk house one year ago for $6500 and put $2000 more in it. Been camping 8 times so far and have really enjoyed it.

I have an f350 so weight isnt a big issue.
With a 1/2 ton pickup I would keep it under 4000 - 4500lb dry weight and better have good brakes.

Also get a good weight distributing/anti away hitch. For sure

With a 1500, i would stick to trailers that have a dry weight of less than 6000. Ultra light trailers. After you add all your gear, gas, and people on the tow vehicle, you don’t want to have a trailer that weight too much more than that. I had 5200 dry weight (mallard m27) and it was comfortable pulling with a Yukon.

Edit: And if it’s just the two of you, don’t get a trailer with bunks in the back. Instead, get the rear living models that have rocking recliners and a table — since you don’t need the sleeping space.

Edit again: and plan to replace the mattress. The stock mattresses suck. There are comfy RV sized queen memory foam mattresses on amazon that don’t cost too much.

We couldn't be happier with our Lucid 12" Hybrid latex foam mattress in our fifth wheel. $420 or so as I recall for the queen. Pocketed coils with foam, stiff sidewalls you can sit on without sliding off. I can't sleep on memory foam (too hot) or that gel crap. The Latex breathes and we sleep great on it. FWIW, a friend spent more than $1K on a Nectar for the house and is one his third one. Says they're complete garbage.

Happy trails rv rentals in Cherokee usually has a good selection from small to big luxury class A. I used them for a couple years before buying mine. And i somewhat regret buying instead of sticking to rentals.
