Doesn't have anything to do with camping but when I was in EMT school in 88 I worked at a bar on the Marietta square called Waterstreet. It started life as a feed and seed supposedly and was built pre civil war. Out the back door, directly across the alleyway was a boarded up hotel that also dated to pre civil war. We used to regularly see what was obviously candle light in various windows of it at night.
At waterstreet after closing several times me and my buddy that was the kitchen manager would be in the office (in the basement) after locking the doors and hear the back door slam open and shut, someone in boots walk from the back door to the front door and hear it slam open and shut and when we went and looked both doors would still be locked and shut. This probably happened at least a dozen times while I worked there.
