I have recently bought a new Rock River AR-15. I am looking to customize it and I am honestly clueless as to what kind of scope I should get. This is my first assault rifle so like I said, I'm clueless. I would appreciate some input!

Depends what you want to shoot. For short range, red dots are nice and you can get a decent "starter" for $100.

I've got my eye on a Leopold or Nikon 1-4x variable for short to mid range.

It depends on want you want to do. If you want it for close quarter application like an urban setting go with a Trijicon RMR, ACOG or similar holographic site. If you want to push the limits of the rifle and reach out with accuracy for critter dusting or dialing in your long(ish 400-500yds) range precision shooting, go with a NightForce 2.5-10 or something of that nature. I definitely recommend a high dollar scope over what would seem to be a bargain. Like dude said, I'd run a search on youtube to see what some comparisons of scopes/sites that fit your application.

Thanks for the help! I am more interested in testing the limits of my precision. I am a pretty decent shot short range without a scope. I need something to test the limits of my gun as well as my precision. I will definitely check out you tube.

Get a Trijicon Accupoint 1X4 with the triangle reticle. Bar none, I can't think of a better scope for an AR. True 1 power like a red dot and the ability to zoom for a long shot. Clear and bright 30 mm tube. Expensive, yes but worth it. You can always get your money out of a Trijicon.
