Mostly remember me and mom doing sugar runs all over town......
First real job was in a wholesale grocers warehouse (not forklift certified) and I remember men coming in with orders for 10/50lb bags of cracked corn & 20/25lb bags of granulated sugar.

Wayne (the caller at the cash register) told me it was for "feeding hogs."

IIRC (and I may not), back in late '50's Virginia if you purchased over a certain amount of sugar at one time, cashier had to record your information from your driver's license.

My stepdad ran a 150 gallon still back when I was a kid. Best I can remember, it wasn't rocket science.

The smell of that mash fermenting, though....
I have toured Jack Daniel's a couple times, and yes, the fumes coming off the fermentation vat were intense, enough to make you woozy just leaning over and taking a deep breath.
