Carry on federal land

National forests are federal land and it`s ok to carry as long as the NF is in a state that allows carry, such as Ga.I have hunted on COE land around West Point with a shotgun during turkey season.I got the permit at the COE office. The ranger had no problem with me staying in the campground with the shotgun.West Point WMA is COE land. You can hunt the WMA with a gun,but you can`t carry your concealed weapon there.Seems like each lake owned by COE has its own take on the law.AS for me,I won`t camp without a weapon.Just keep it out of sight, don`t ask questions, and there should be no problem.WE can carry in national parks, which is federal land.I wonder about the campers that were asked to leave the campgrounds. How did the COE know they had firearms?

Yes, please disregard that report.

COE land is off limits outside of legal hunting.

National parks are ok (no buildings)

Other federal property, you will have to research.

BTW, there is a case pending against the coe questioning whether the banning of guns by the coe is legitimate. Hopefully the judge will stop this infringement.

Saw this on the wsb website. http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/new-gun-law-does-not-pertain-many-campsites/nfzYC/

I thought you could carry on federal land, just not in the buildings as of 2010.

Anybody that can clear that up?

That report is talking about Federal Land that is managed by the US Corps of Engineers. The Rangers were not clarifying to the reporter about the COE angle and the reporter never said anything about Alltoona being managed by the COE, which is the real reason people can't carry there.

The actual law about Federal Land carry (Chapter 50 Chapter 1 Part 27 § 27.42 Firearms) is here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/granule/CF...012-title50-vol9-sec27-42/content-detail.html

National Parks Legislation
Under the Credit Card Act of 2009,(74) the Senate adopted an amendment to prevent the Secretary
of the Interior from enforcing or promulgating any regulation that would prohibit an individual
from possessing a firearm, including an assembled or functional firearm, in any unit of the
National Park System (NPS) or the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS).(75) An individual
who is carrying a firearm must comply with the law of the state in which the NPS or NWRS is
located. Accordingly, an individual, who is carrying a concealed firearm and hiking through a
national park that crosses state lines, bears the responsibility of knowing beforehand the
concealed carry laws of each state he or she plans to travel through.(76)

Laws Regarding Firearms on National Forest Lands
First, the primary laws governing possession of firearms and other weapons on National
Forest are State Laws. These laws were developed by the states following establishment
of our Cooperative Wildlife Management Agreements. Most notable of the state laws
concerns controlling firearms on the National Forest are “cased gun laws”.......

The second exception to this law allows people with a concealed weapon permit
to carry a loaded, concealed, handgun either on their person or in their vehicle
while on National Forest. This does not apply if the person is engaged in a
primitive weapons season or chase only season.

Chapter 50 Chapter 1 Part 27 § 27.42 Firearms. www.handgunlaw.us 8

(e) Notwithstanding any other provision in this Chapter, persons may possess, carry, and transport concealed,
loaded, and operable firearms within a national wildlife refuge in accordance with the laws of the state in
which the wildlife refuge, or that portion thereof, is located, except as otherwise prohibited by applicable
federal law.

Note: Restrooms and Picnic Shelters that are free standing and not part of another building should not be
considered a federal building in National Parks/ National Wildlife Refuges. Some NP’s have posted outside
areas where Employees talk to groups etc. If it is posted do not enter that area with a firearm. By federal law
they must post any Building/Area that is off limits.

Note: What to look for first is if the Area is under the Dept of Interior. If it is you can carry there if not
posted. National Wildlife Refuges, National Monuments, National Preserves, National Historic Sites/Parks,
National Rivers, National Memorials, National Recreation Areas and National Seashores usually fall under
the National Park Service which the Department of Interior operates. This means all these places listed allow
carry there if you can legally carry in the state the above mentioned are located. Do be aware that all
buildings posted are off limits to the carrying of firearms.
