Got a road trip coming up next month to NY. Will be there for 2 days. Stopping in Richmond, VA for a night on the way up and back. Is it worth trying to travel with my firearm? Thanks

Well I'm from NY{Brooklyn} to be exact. If you plan on visiting the city{5 boroughs} I'd suggest you leave them home. Hell don't even say the word "firearm" in NY.. They'd be ready to hit you with that 3 year minimum...
Great Question! Have family in Richmond you can leave it with and pick up on the way back? I understand NYPD and Staties are VERY aggressive when dealing with southern pro gun states.
In NY it's a felony to possess an unregistered pistol. I think it's just a misdemeanor to unlawfully transport a long gun, however. (like a pump action shotgun or a semi auto that is not an assault rifle & not fed from a high-capacity magazine ).
I don't know about Maryland's laws, or any others really, but I suspect that Virginia ,North Carolina, and Pennsylvania would all be OK with you having a (sporting) long gun / carbine /shotgun in your vehicle.
Personally, I might pick up a cheap old Maverick 88 for $150 to take in my vehicle just for this trip. It wouldn't be useful in every conceivable self-defense situation, but for some of them having a long gun in your car is better than not having any gun available at all.
A ordinary, common long gun would probably be legal in most places, and if it's not legal to carry loaded in your vehicle, then it might be only be very minor crime ----something you could be willing to take a chance on.
Rather than a very serious crime which you should not even think about risking.

Just stop at the SC border and turn around.
Been a long time, but if I remember right, Mass. will give you free room and board for a year for that handgun you want to carry.
Once I get to my destination, I don’t plan to carry. I’m just concerned about the travel to and from. Thanks for the input
