Chambered or Not?

Definetly one in the pipe. All of my guns that are out in the house and cars are all ready to fire. You won't have time to rack one or you'll be heard

I carry chambered but have been trained in safety for many years. In reality though you may not have time to rack a round in a situtation of self defense if that is the purpose of your handgun.Go through a safety course and remain conscious of where your trigger finger is on the weapon until a must fire situation occurs.

I won't knock anyone for not carrying with a round in the chamber. It's all in how you train and what you are comfortable with. My suggestion would be to shoot whatever semi-auto you decide to carry, A LOT. Use your holster, do drills, lots of them. Figure out what works for you (safely) and use it. A good venue to do some of this would be to attend some IDPA matches. Most of the clubs in the Atlanta area base their courses of fire on real events. If you really want to prove to yourself what's the better way, shoot a couple of matches in which your gun starts with an empty chamber.

If you're paying attention to what goes on around you, chances are that you will never have to use your gun for anything more than as something to hang on your seatbelt and help drag your pants down. A good rule to live by, if you can is; If you wouldn't go there without a gun, DON'T go there WITH a gun.

Chambered, but in a decent Holster that has a good retention. Carrying chambered does not bother me, but I want a tight holster when it is at home/on my nightstand. I never want to be on TV because my child shot hereself with an unsecured/unattended weapon.

Chambered EXCEPT for the HD pump / Semi Auto Shotgun, it's been suggested to me that letting the BG hear the sound of the shell getting chambered may avoid the need to fire all together. Don't know for sure but on some levels it make sense.

It also lets the Bg know right where you are, and what you are armed with.

I agree with the shotgun, same with my AK, the sound of that thing racking will let people know real quick what's about to happen.

As far as handguns, I carry 2 in the chamber.

True but they don't know what else I have and they may not be expecting any resistance. Plus I figure if they had any brains, or were breaking in at 2am, they would already know where any occupants were in the house before they tried to enter.
