I was reading about this earlier on the cmp forums. Lots of speculation and unknowns. One theory is the cmp needs a break. Due to recent demand .

It's happened in the past,more than likely just catching up and taking a breather while sorting stock for new builds ,they'll be plenty more in a few months. Happens about every 12-14 months

They have temporarily stopped taking orders to catch up on their backlog.

Look for them to take orders again in 2-6 months and then jump to buy!

You can order a "Special" in .308 (the 30-06's are sold out) with has a new barrel and new stock now but it lacks collector value:

CMP Special (.308) M1 Garand. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield or HRA receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. A .308 spacer block is installed to prevent the loading of a .30-06 round into the chamber.
