I say way too expensive. After the ticket costs with FFL fees, you will be in around $2K for a worn old zip-tied pistol of unknown quality.
I bought some of these used 1911's back in the 1990's for $500. I got tired of owning them and sold or traded them. I say don't use emotion to drive your purchase.

I will be no where near $2k per pistol, not even close. I was going to be in Anniston on that day anyways shooting in the D-Day match. The indication is that these will be better than luck of the draw CMP 1911s.
I'm going to try luck of the draw for 2 Rack Grades. See too many Field Grades and Service grades w replacement slides.
From what I've read, seen and heard the rack grades are probably your best bet for an unadulterated pistol albeit a little worse for wear.
I'm just hoping to make it through the day.
I'm going to be able to hand select for pistols without replacement slides.
