American Eagle Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, collided midair with an Army helicopter, carrying three people, near Reagan Washington National Airport last night.

As a retired FAA air traffic controller of over 30 years this is your worst nightmare. I unfortunately saw many crashes in my career (many fatal) but thankfully none were my fault. My heart goes out the controllers, the family of the pilots/crewmembers, the passenger’s families and the rescue crews that are having to deal with this accident.

My first CO was killed in a plane crash, Lost my BIL in a crash while serving in Alaska, my DIL lost her first husband in a helicopter crash while serving in the Marines with our oldest.
The nice lady that used to sit with my wife before she retired survived a commercial plane crash years ago...she was lucky.
I don't fly anymore and this kind of incident remains me why.
