Connecting Generator to house

Take an ext cord cut off female end replace with male end. Plug into any outlet in home it will power everything on that circuit. PLEASE SHUT OFF THE BREAKER FOR THAT CIRCUIT BEFORE DOING THIS !!!!! If you don't shut off the breaker you will be sending power backwards to broken line outside and can shock power folks trying to do repairs.

Or connect the wire to your ac disconnect outside. It should back feed through the panel and turn off all the breakers not being used. Only leave the bare essentials on. Also make sure the main is off the the panel so when power does come back on nothing blows up.

Best way is to get an electrician ( if you're not comfortable) to wire up specific circuits you want to power and make it go through a transfer switch.
There are pretty good tutorials on youtube.

Generator interlock kit is the safest way to go. Basically, you dedicate a breaker (usually 30A or larger) at the top of your panel to an outlet that is specifically set up for a generator cord. A simple, mechanical device that is screwed to your breaker panel guarantees that the main breaker to utility power must be switched off in order to engage the breaker to the generator outlet.
