Copper.

Anyone out there ever sell copper? I stripped an investment property before it was destroyed. Anyone out there have experience with taking it in and getting money for it? Is it even worth it?
If you're selling copper pipe make sure you cut off and separate the fitting's from the clean pipe because they'll usually pay you less for the fittings since they have solder in them..

The scrapmonster site mentioned above is a great site to get general trends, only problem with it is it lags a month if you don't pay for their premium membership. A lot can happen in the world that will drive commodity prices one way or the other quickly. My short answer is to hold onto it right now and call your scrap yard every couple of days to get their price and as soon as the price dips go sell it.

Long answer, two things have happened this month that will drive the price of scrap in the coming months.

The major domestic steel mills announced today they hit over 80% booking and capacity utilization for their booking cycle. When that happens they typically buy all the scrap they can which drives the price of scrap higher, at least short term.

Last week, China threatened to cut their steel making capacity in half and stop all steel exports. In the steel world that's freaking huge. They are by far the largest producer of steel and consumer of scrap in the world. If they cut their capacity in half it will disrupt prices for at least a couple of months. If they follow through, it would create a glut of scrap and the price would drop to levels where it's not worth your gas money to go to the scrapyard.

did it really cut down on the theft? cause i dont think it did. might make it harder for some junkies to get paid maybe but they still steal whatever aint bolted down
Absolutely it has cut down on theft. I own a demolition company and deal heavily is scrap metal. It used to like a scene from the walking dead protecting scrap. The economy has also had an effect, copper isn't even worth stealing these days. If you cannot hold on to it scrap it. The questions they ask are well worth the reduction in theft it has created

Around here the recycling centers buy it- Newell Recycling, Scnitzer or however you spell it...

Mom had a new HVAC system put into her house... I put the old one in my truck and disassembled everything- sold it for scrap. Yeah- I'll never do that again. Worked 1/2 a Saturday on that damn thing and earned a whopping $45. Not to mention waiting in line with all the meth heads at the recycling center.
What's up bro! Where have u been hiding?? Lol

like someone said, copper prices suck right now

maybe do this with your scrap metal and stack it for later?

*disclaimer* i wouldnt do this with shorts on

of course if you make the blocks too large then the scrap metal places might not take them (as you could have filled it with a brick in the middle er something)

About 12 years ago, when I was an electrician, I took about $1500 worth of copper to Newell in Hapeville. Was good money but I did spend the time stripping the insulation off. Not doing that again. I don't even remember having to show my ID to get paid. My, how times have changed.
