I'm going to have quite a bit of tv time here soon (gotta love paid vacation) so I was thinking of brushing up on some old cowboy movies. What are some of your favorites and why? Favorite characters? I've spent some time recently watching the old "Bonanza" and "The Big valley" on tv but I'm sure I need to watch some old classics. Here's one of my favorites.

Really liked "The Searchers" with John Wayne. Like the original True Grit as well, although most people seem to like the recent version more.

As airx22 mentioned, Outlaw Josey Wales. And if you have some time to invest (these are more westerns than cowboy movies), the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns were at the top of my favorites list:

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach
Once Upon a Time in the West - Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards

Also i just discovered another very good cowboy/western movie a couple of months ago with Robert Duvalle and Kevin Costner called "Open Range".

And one that a lot of folks have never seen - Shane.

All of the above highly recommended.
