Wife was jumping our 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport off and crossed the terminals on the battery. It will crank now if its jumped off but it wont idle, I have to keep on the gas. I am hoping its just the computer that is fried....any suggestions?

Usually crossing the terminals fries the alternator. Sounds like you need a battery too. Autozone will check your charging system and also run a diagnostic free if you can get it to em. Might wanna call first and make sure they can do a 96.

I just realized we don't have an automotive discussion forum.

I would say you cooked the battery and it won't hold a charge which means the alternator is having to do provide all the power on demand.

If you jump it off and leave it hooked up to the other vehicle does it idle fine?

Actually, I did something very similar before.

I left my lights on all night, then jumped it off and immediately left. I had to hold the gas down everytime I slowed down or it would die.

I'd leave the battery disconnected over night and let the computer reset. May still need a new battery, but I would think the car wouldn't even start if the cpu was fried.

Fuses are all good, need tot take the battery to get it checked but it is a brand new battery (less than 1 month old) so hopefully its not messed up. It fires up when jumped off but will not idle at all, just dies when I let off the gas. I wish there was a way to run a diagnostic on the Computer because pulling the alternator is going to be quite a task.

The battery is probably toast, but pretty much anywhere has 1 year free replacement so you shouldn't have any problems with getting a new one. (Just don't mention what happened!)

I would leave the battery unhooked and then just start it with a new or fully charged battery tomorrow, then let it idle for 10 or 15 minutes. Hopefully it'll idle alright after all that.

Gotta be at least a bad battery or a short in the wiring if you gotta jump it.
If you have an autozone near by get em to check it. hopefully they will have someone knowledgeable.
Sometimes though just a kid that was workin at mc ds last week.
Its free and can be a good resource if they got good help.
