Custom post-war Mauser value?

I know many of these are pretty rough, basic hunting rifles built on military surplus platforms…and are not considered high value guns.
But look at this one…
Any of you guys have an idea on value for this post-war Mauser 98 sporter? It appears to me to be a very high quality rifle. The scope is period correct I think? I don’t know much about these guns and I’m trying to help a friend sell it.
He has had some serious medical issues recently and needs to pay some bills.
He said he has owned this gun for almost 40 years.
Any comments on condition and value would be greatly appreciated.

If no rust anywhere and pristine chamber and barrel, Asking price of $3,500 to 4,200. You won't likely get the money local. Yours looks Pre WWII. Price is also dependent on the manufacturer. Many guild guns remained anonymous. Without a known desirable maker the price goes down to $2,000 tops. Ship it to Rock Island Auction house. You'll pay shipping and premium, but it will bring top dollar for what it is.
Just a suggestion, you could try a local auction that does on line, but I follow those and prices are down right now.
Beautiful rifle, the kind that causes my mind to imagine volumes of thoughts. It's beautiful.

Unfortunately I don’t think he knows the maker…and it does (did before I cleaned last night lol) have a rust spot on the front sight blade. Gun’s bolt and set triggers work flawlessly. The wood to metal fit and checkering are works of art. The old German scope is very cool also. Are there any maker’s marks I should look for? I’m curious about why you think it’s pre-war?

No pics of any marks? Anywhere? Chambering is usually on the barrel forward of the receiver ring, left side.

Wood is fancy. Not a 401k rifle but still somewhere in the range of $1,350 - $2,500 depending is my guess. What is it chambered in?

Very beautiful. Really lost craftsmanship in these. No idea on value but I would suggest an auction on GB rather than bothering here.
