If not already, you need to tool up to cast and reload so you can afford to shoot it. Cost me 25 to 30 cent per shot (mostly powder cost) since I started casting. Factory fodder is $1.50 to $2.00 per shot.

I have the CVA hunter 35 rem and 7mm-08 and a stalker in .223. They all shoot great. Hope you enjoy the 45-70.

You are absolutely right. Hornady runs about $1.75 per shot. What kind of scopes are yours fitted with?

On the CVAs, I just use the cheap Konus that came on them. So far, they have worked great. I have a Nikon BDC 300 for black powder that I got a good deal on and am thinking about putting it on my Handi 45-70. Figure the trajectory will be similar for the BDC.

I reload my 45-70 with the Hornady FTX bullets. The case has to be trimmed shorter for feeding. They are very accurate and makes shooting affordable for that round.

I use the Nikon 2-7 BDC on my rifle and with their SpotOn App I can hit about anything. You do need to know your muzzle velocity with reloads for it to work.
