Daughter took her 2010 Honda Fit to the local ripem off shop and this is what they said about her car that went in for brake noise

All you ODT'ers with kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews - if you are doing some light wrenching teach em how to do brakes, alternators, water pumps, starters, batteries. Unfortunately many youngsters these days barely know how to drive, much less basics of maintenance and repairs. If its a stick shift forget it - might as well be an alien spacecraft to most of them. Let em get some grease on their hands and understand enough basic maintenance to be able to question "the shop", at least to understand precisely what they are talking about when that high quote comes in. For that particular car the Amazon link above contained all pads, shoes, rotors and drums for a full brake job. I think it was $150ish. I had the local Sears store in Athens before they went under try to charge my wife and daughter $1000 to install a water pump on a Suburban. New pump was $40. Fortunately I had not only taught my daughter how to install a water pump - I had actually taught her years earlier on that SAME vehicle so when they gave a $1000 quote she just laughed at them mockingly and left.

They quoted her $1700 to
Change front brake pads
Flush brake fluid
Change front rotors
Change 4 plugs

The guy told her the reason her brake fluid was so dark is because she had algae in the system from water. WTF!!

Why do shops always trey to rip off single women with their cars. Assholes!
When I was 18 my aunt said she wanted me to take her truck (Chebby 1500) to a shop because her brakes were squeaky.

I took it to America service station in townelake.

They wanted $1750 for the brake job!!! THAT WAS OVER 20 YEARS AGO “MONEY”!!!!

I told them where to stick it and went and got a set of pads and rotors for the front for $100 and changed them myself in her driveway.

Scummy ppl are gunna be scummy!!!

I would at least leave an honest review on that company!

Brake fluid can absorb water, it comes from the heat cycles of the calipers, brake system.

Learn to fix stuff yourself. Yes shops scam people.
Brake fluid will absorb water naturally but the fluid was dark from brake dust not algae. 😂

The dust from the pads and metal from the rotors gets on the calipers pistons and works its way in.

I agree 100%. Learn to do the work yourself. Tons of YouTube videos. Although some women don’t have men in their lives and also can’t even cook to save their lives and hoard cats. We call those women lonely liberals or just bat**** crazy. 😂😂😂😂

Vaseline? VASELINE? Why are you so sensitive?
$700 is a lot of money to a lot of people nowadays. A $200 job has turned into double or triple and a lot of people out there are hurting.

Try to be understanding friend. There are many many people on limited incomes and a hit like that can be life altering.

They have to choose food/medicine or being mobile. That’s tough. 🥺🥺😢

My daughter went to a different shop that I had already told her not to go to due to prices. She found out for herself when they quoted her $900. The difference between the shops other than price was that this particular shop after they **** you on price they hand you a red rose to say thank you. No kidding!

A 72yr old single female friend of my wife's was having misfire problems with her SUV. She took it to Advance and they gave her the printout saying it had a bad cylinder 5 coil pack. She took the car to her shop she had the car regularly serviced at for years. They told her $600. She left and came to me to get it checked. I scanned it and went to the store and spent $40 for the coil. I then called her over to explain to her what they were going to charge her $600 for.
Pull the beauty cover off the top of the engine.
This coil pack was easy access right in the front with two 10mm bolts.
Pulled the old pack out
Put the new pack in
Tighten both 10mm bolts
Replace beauty cover
The job took 15 minutes.

That lady was mad as hell and she said she was leaving to go give them a piece of her mind.

Daughter took her car to Autozone to have the battery replaced and they insisted they could not change the battery in a "hybrid" and recommended she take it to a shop a few miles away. It was not a hybrid... they were just lazy. She watched a 10 minute u-tube video with step by step instructions for the exact make and model and then change it right there in the parking lot.

My thought is what looks like algae is not algae. Brake fluid is caustic and will kill plants. It may be green slime created by the metal or chemplastics in the brake system, but I certainly don't think it is algae.
