Diesel exhaust fluid

Besides…. big screens, panoramic roof, power everything and heated & cooled massaging seats are super decent in a work truck.

and I won’t even get in to the business benefits of having a depreciating asset like a new truck…so even if I loved my truck they have a 2-3 year shelf life at most.

You can have that payment. I did that depreciation on a new truck once. I figured out it still cost me a bunch of money.

But that was all bypassed, it’s there, but not being used. I just deleting DEF would cause the filters to completely clog up and the truck would likely have head and cylinder damage. They will not work independently, the DEF system is on your truck to fool any inspectors.
If it had DEF it had SCR, early systems had a system that used fuel to wash out the filters, (how’s that for efficiency)
First hit on Google.
“Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an active emissions control technology system used in many advanced diesel engines. ... Hot exhaust gases flow out of the engine and into the SCR system where aqueous urea (known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF) is sprayed onto a special catalyst. The DEF sets off a chemical reaction in the exhaust on a ...”

again, you are wrong. The SCR/DPF is still cleaned with fuel. Ford dumps excess fuel through a cylinder to ignite the DPF, Dodge actually has an extra injector post Turbo. DEF is injected after the SCR/DPF and cleans nothing. 100% of it's purpose is to bond with any remaining NOx and transform it into nitrogen and water.

*EDIT*. The above is wrong. The DEF injector is at the head end of the SCR/DPF. I was mistaken.

Again, DEF has nothing to do with the SCR or DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). The SCR/DPF is cleaned with fire, not DEF. When DEF is mixed into the exhaust stream the UREA bonds with the NOx to make nitrogen and water. The DEF system and the SCR/DPF are two totally different systems.

Also, the Bull piss story is just like all the BS gun shop stories you hear over the years. A funny story, but completely based in BS (rather than BU). UREA manufacturing long predates modern DEF, and DEF is nothing more than UREA and de-ionized water. Urine has never been used to make DEF.
The two will not work independently, you can’t just delete DEF and go on. It is a system that requires all of it to work.

I could have sworn that some vehicles used DEF without a DPF. I now see that the 2007 6.4 had a DPF without DEF, and I had it backward. There is a very good chance I may not actually know everything....

don't tell my wife.

LOL I hear ya.
but I deal with this stuff almost daily. Yes early systems used only fuel to clean (causing it to pollute even more with more fuel used) You see the trucks puffing white smoke? That’s from earlier system that the DOC is failing or something else is wrong, but it is still “working”
Somewhere about 2007 the Govt required the use of DEF
Edit: that wasn’t mandated till later. My 2009 only used fuel.

And the EPA does what is does best, screws up everything it touches. Brilliant fore thought. Let's put so much crap on our diesel cars and trucks, all while lowering the efficiency of them, and making them more costly and less dependable. Brilliant!

They whole system is kinda stupid. Wouldn’t the environment be better off with less fuel used?
And how many people that might would have used the more efficient diesel engine are opting for gas to get around all this?

My 2003 Ram 3500 gets upward to 20 MPG commuting to my Big truck every couple of days. . (I park 60+miles away for fuel saving.) A gas burner in those year models would likely get only about 15-17 practical fuel mileage.

I was thinking of buying a new truck but ruled out Diesels because of the headaches of the DPF/DEF systems.

Urea is used in DEF and Russia is a major exporter of fertilizer used in DEF. Specifically to China, which is the major exporter of DEF.

1/3 of the trucking industry falls under the EPA rules requiring DEF. Which is any diesel truck post 2010. DEF is is a mixture of 32.5% Ammonia and the rest is Distilled water. So one could technically make their own. Truckers have used Windshield washer fluid that contains ammonia until they can get some DEF.

If there's not enough fluid, the NOX sensor detects the amount of NOX being released and puts the truck in Limp Mode. I'm wondering if there's a way to bypass the sensor?
Yep. How's those Russian sanctions working out?

I’ll deal with a little DEF to be in a late model truck the 1,050 lb.-ft. of torque which is well over double the old 7.3 makes up for it.

DEF can be deleted. (would gain even more power)

We bought a 7.3 its a cool truck but it’s like driving a moped, actually a moped may have more power….

There is something to be said for higher flow split shot injectors, bigger turbo, intercooler and hydra tune and no payments…you’re right about the ride and all the other amenities though in the new stuff but, that’s what the F150 Lariat is for. And, I am still able to write off s**t in my business.
