Diesel Mechanic Needed

Yep, he has a garage on property. I’d suggest giving him a call, he’s been in business for a long time. He used to be a Ford diesel tech and started out on his own.

Don’t know if you got it fixed yet but I had virtually the same symptoms with my 2001 Chevy 2500 H D Duramax. I was convinced my accerator peddle position sensor was the culprit. Not so. My nephew is a diesel mechanic and he told me to put 3 oz of Lucas fuel injector cleaner for every 10 gallons of fuel. Keep going that for 2 - 3 tank fulls. I did and after about a full tank and a half I had no more issues. Been over 6 months now and I put it in there every 2 or 3 fillips and still no issues. Make sure the bottled says for gasoline AND Diesel engines

Just bought my first Diesel - 2000 F250 with the 7.3, ZF6 transmission. Of course I get it home and start driving it a few days and I get a check engine light intermittently while downshifting. Not sure what the issue is, can’t really replicate it. Although it feels like I get a dead pedal for a moment, the service engine light comes on, then it powers up again. I thought I was just not in gear, which is possible. Or maybe a bad TPS sensor based on my googles?

Anywho, any suggestions on a good diesel mechanic in the Kennesaw, Marietta, Dallas area? Maybe a local trader who is down to teach a newbie a couple things? I’ll pay you for your time ofc.
Local diesel tech but we are a ways from that area. We see a lot of 7.3s, I daily an ‘01 ZF6 truck.
If the MIL is lighting, it is very likely the PCM will have something stored in the Continuous Memory DTC’s. I recommend looking at codes directly after the problem occurs without turning the key off. These trucks are funny when it comes to fault code reading. Any OBD scanner can retrieve codes, which are 100% needed to have a chance at evaluating the problem. You can also run a KOEO self-test and hope for clues.

I have a couple ?’s about the issue when it occurs. You say dead pedal, does that mean the engine RPM’s aren’t changing when you ask it to? Or the RPM’s rise without the truck pulling. Post a video or two of the issue from in-cab if you can.

If it seems like the truck is shutting off completely I would start looking at fuel delivery issues. (Fuel pickup, clogged line/filter/fuel bowl, delivery pump, etc) Connect an in-line fuel pressure gauge and look for 50psi or higher at time issue occurs.

Intermittent low power can be low engine oil level (trust me), Bad IPR valve, bad ICP sensor, leak @ hi pressure oil system. With a scanner you can monitor the ICP reading while driving to rule out an issue with the hi-pressure oil system at the time the issue happens.

If it’s a skip, I would look towards the injection system or wiring for injectors. The wiring passes thru the valve cover gasket and connectors are prone to issues.

Good luck, if it’s a manual 7.3 truck chances are the guts are OK, just needs some sorting to get it right. Post a vid and I’ll see if I can make heads or tails of what’s happening.
