Does cerakote depreciate a guns value??

I had a NIB Legion that had a nick in the coating. Boxed it up and sent it to SIG and they replaced the entire gun. I've never had a Problem with S&W or SIG backing their products. Factory coatings are backed by factory warranty and in most cases held to a higher standard than a guy in his garage. Not saying that there are not quality coaters out there that may have a better set up than most. Just not rolling the dice.

If I were to do anything cosmetic It would not involve internals.

I'm definitely not talking about hugs in their garage. I'm speaking to proven applicators. I'm also not talking about coating internals.

The applicator that ganked up my revolver was an approved cerakote dealer. Everyone makes mistakes and I trust a machine guided by a laser and precision software more than an actual person. Even then I hope the person that pushes the button has set everything right. When getting paint work done on a car I've seen some really nice work and I've seen garbage. Do you know a good place to get a Ferrari painted in Macon? I would probably browse the internet looking for a place with great feedback within Atlanta. Same thing with engraving.
If a vender has a ton of great feeback then you increase your chances of getting a good product. Just never expect everything to go perfectly. Even gun manufactures backed by millions of dollar in R+D with high tech equipment and well trained staff make mistakes. If you want to bet your gun and your life on a gun smith thats been painting for a few years then go for it. Again... I'm not saying its a bad thing. I have a few that are coated from the factory. Still I like plain Stainless better and everyone here is entitled to their opinion.

As far as internals go. "I" havent seen a slide that was just spayed on the outside. I'm sure you can do it but, the work I've seen done, the coater spays inside of the slide. My second issue with coating was an old Sig I had and I coated slide. The barrel hole in the front of the slide had more coating applied to the bottom of the hole than the top. This was pushing the barrel up slightly and causing feeding issues. I sent it to SIG at my cost since it was old and they told me what the problem was and removed some of the coating. Problem solved.

Again,again feel free to paint your gun. It's your gun and your money. Out of the 2 firearms I had done I had 2 problems that needed correcting. Once they were corrected the fire arm operated properly. There will not be a 3rd.

Depends on quality of Cerakote application.
Depends on quality of the Gun.
Depends on if your 'value' is comparable to a potential buyer's 'value'.
Only have one gun so only need one buyer to agree.
What all the tire kickers think won't matter (to anyone but them)

The guy is no longer in business and IMHO is a good person just not a good coater. So no need to shame him.
That's part of the point I am trying to make. I would bet there are a LOT of people doing this on the side that have very little long term experience. Making mistakes is a part of the way you learn. Old timer smiths have screwed up enough to know wtf they are doing since they've probably screwed up a few times and learned from it. New procedures will take growing pains to find out what works and what doesn't. Others don't care they just see it as a source of income to add to the shop. Every gun smith jumping on the coating band wagon to make a buck can't (and won't) produce exceptional work. Just like artists. Some are just naturally talented some wing it.

Recommendations are like positive feedback. You meet talk for a few minutes and give a good review.
Some people are genuinely good and honest people and some you just think are.

I would cerakote the crap out of those. Just slather on the OD green and then flip it for 10k. Much like the lower I have for trade on here!

MaconGuns , On a serious note when you find a good applicator the point about cerakote affecting performance is null. I have had alpha and omega arms cerakote a custom gun he built me (posted on this thread), GA precision with their GAP crusader, and then 5 guns by fatalbert. What you’re talking about isn’t a cerakote problem you’re talking about QA/QC which affects every firearm. Heck cmshoot has a thread about an issue with Daniel Defense. Does that mean DD is a bad firearms company? Of course not. It’s just one bad gun out of thousands of fine tuned machines they’ve created. Also, don’t take my post as being negative, you bring up some great points, and give great alternatives/examples.

I've had a few guns with Cerakote. Both factory and some I had done. I did have an issue with one done by someone no longer in business. Somewhere on the inside of the gun, the Cerakote was applied too thick and would not let allow the sear to reset or something to that affect and caused the gun to go full auto and dump the entire magazine.

So what you’re saying is, that guy actually turned your weapon into a class 3 and increased its value 20x?? Am I hearing that right?
