This is a heating tube that goes from an exhaust manifold to a carburetor choke.

Does the grayish wrapping appear to be asbestos?

I try to not touch or handle it and wish it wasn't on the tube. I took it off years ago and have assumed it was.

Dampen a section of material with a spray bottle containing water/few drops of dish detergent.

Take a thumbnail sized sample and put it in a 4-5 mil thick small ziplock plastic bag.

Download a chain of custody form from a lab, such as EMSL. Fill out form, mail form and sample to lab, with fee...get results.

Then you'll know.

Never heard of asbestos on an engine. It’s more of a flaky material if I’m remembering correctly.
Probably more like header wrap. I’m

Touching won’t hurt you, you would have to breath in particles over an extended period of time.
My concern is (if it is asbestos) handling it COULD cause the fibers to release into the air and pose a health risk.

It's an old part, so I always assumed it could be asbestos and treated it with care. I would like to reuse that preheat tube if possible, but maybe I just need to buy a replacement.

Don’t need to cover it, don’t need to replace it unless it’s incomplete or in pieces. Just leave it on the tube and leave it be.
