I'm currently in the market for a new old truck and I want to get a diesel. I've heard the Ford 7.3 is awesome and the Ford 6.0 is horrible, but I haven't heard anything on the Duramax motors. Are they any good? Is there a year range of good and bad ones?

I'm not considering Dodge currently, even though the Cummins is great I can't stand the interiors on the models that I can afford.

the 6.0 is not a bad motor if taken care of and the weak areas replaced I.E the egr system. Mine makes over 400HP and has 0 engine problems with 125000 ish miles on the clock

I know you dont like the interiors but.... some years ago when business was good I bought a 95 Ford Powerstroke, 99 Chev 6.5, and a 95 Dodge Cummings. The Ford and Chev are sitting in the back lot with vines growing over them and I am still driving the Cummings daily with 380k on it.

If you get a duramax get one made after 2005. Vin code (8th) digit should be 2 for the engine. The earlier ones had the injectors inside the valve cover, they would leak and fill the crankcase up with diesel fuel. The new design fixes that.

+1 for cummins man. Bullet proof engines. I have never owned any Dmaxes but I have rode in many and they dont even compare to a cummins. 7.3 Powerstrokes are very good engines too

BTW Ford 6 leakers can be good engines but its hit or miss. I have seen them last 300k and i have seen them blow the heads off at 50k.

The Duramax coupled with the Allison transmission is unbeatable IMO. The LBZ Duramax motor (late 06-late 07) is the most in demand. It was the culmination of previous motors and was the last motor produced without all the emission restricting add on's.

My company vehicle is a 2008 Duramax and I will be getting a new Chevy 2500 with the Duramax/Allison combo. IMHO they are the best factory trucks on the road. The duramax is a much quieter engine than the powerstroke or Cummins and is just better engineered. I have over 190,000 on the 2008 and it will remain in the fleet until it hits 300k. It has never needed injectors or any work other than the regular fluid changes and filters. There is a reason that the Duramax engine is a $8500 option.

07 was the best year for Chevy! Injector issues till 05, after they got those strait the tranny had some issues as well as the cam sensor.
Ford 6.0 is junk. If the egr delete has been done, headbolts replaced and oil tubes replaced the it'll last around 75/80k more. Not worth the headache.
Do you pull a lot of weight? All of the animals get 14/19 mpg which isn't good at 3.96 a gal.
