Sounds like you got a great thing going.I honestly don’t see me going anyplace but where I’m hunting now. The owners of Elk Creek Adventures are now good friends of mine, it’s 5,000 private acres, and there’s a great cabin smack in the middle of it. There’s usually 3-4 of us, and we’re the only ones allowed to use the property while we’re there.
Cow tags are OTC in that area of Montana. You just buy your license, and buy your cow tag. I’m not sure what the limit on cow tags are, but I know that you can buy at least 2, because we did in 2023.
Bull tags are a lottery, with a point system. Every year that you apply, your chances of getting a bull tag are supposed to increase. This was my 3rd consecutive year applying for a bull tag. The one I apply for is some sort of “super lottery”, where you’re being drawn for a bull elk, buck (mule or whitetail), and pronghorn buck. Deer doe tags are also OTC, and cost $75. I shot a mule deer doe last year.
I’m renting the cabin for a week next year in between hunting seasons, just to take my wife out there and enjoy the country.
The owners are wanting me to set up a long range shooting school on the property. I’ll be shooting some measurements when I’m out there this October, but it’s possible that we can get out past 2,600 yards.
