Five chicken restaurants in a 1 mile radius...in a small town

Hartwell (pop. 4600) is a small town in a small county (Hart, pop. 26,000) .

Before COVID, small businesses in Hartwell went thru 3-to-5 year boom-bust cycles. The addition of a Purina plant in the last five years has helped stabilize the local economy, as has the number of work-from-home professionals and retirees who have moved here.

But, the city planners need to have their heads examined:

A Church's Chicken is going up right in the middle of the retail section of town. Normally I would welcome another dining choice. But just down the road sits Zaxby's, Guthrie's, Bojangle's, and Popeye's. All in a 1 mile radius, inside city limits. If you go west another mile, a Blazer's Wings.

How much chicken can we eat?!?

And that same radius has more than a half dozen other fast food choices, and plus a half-dozen local eateries. And two Starbucks (WTF is that about?).

If you're ever here: Guthrie's is the best. It's a throwback to the old days of fast food. Tiny place. Take out only. Three things on the menu: Tenders, fries, drinks. Four, if you count the tender sandwich. Best chicken tenders and dipping sauce I've ever had. A bit pricey, but worth every penny.
We like Downtown Cafe when visiting Hartwell. Haven't been in a while, need to road trip.

Plus we all know the one the black folk go to is the superior one....
I wouldn't know, the place and employees look absolutely disgusting so I've never tried it.

I could be wrong, but pretty sure all "big chicks" are independently owned and operated and vary wildly depending on the owner. I don't think they share much with each other outside of the name.

The ones in Jackson and Forsyth all suck and for different reasons, so I'd agree with you there.

We need breakfast places other than Waffle house or Hardee's.

40 - 45 (ish) years ago it was the hamburger joints.
Growing up in my home town there was a cross section
near main street/downtown where you could drive past
McDonald's, Burger King, Hardee's, Wendy's, White Castle,
Krystal's and about 3-5 local places that changed
names/locations every few years, all within 2 to 3 blocks of
each other.
White Castle's yummmmmmm......... Our home town had one of the original Snappy Service joints. The Chile cup was a styrofoam cup of grease, but those original smash burgers were the best. Unlike White castle or Crystal the little burgers were crispy on the edges. I was so sad when it closed. Wal-Mart killed the small Midwest towns.

Pikers. Roughly 10,000 foot stretch of highways 29 and 49 in Eassside of Macongo.

These are chicken places mostly but we also have a cornucopia of garbage ghetto bistros in the same stretch.
