Flag @ Home Depot

I've never been able to understand how a symbol can be of so much importance. If the symbol simply stands for something else, what does it matter? Wasn't there a thread started and contributed to by a number of members that mocked the prophet mohammad? I thought it was humorous, but you should also be able to recognize that a flag is simply a flag.

Just another example of the deep seeded hypocrisy of some people.

Even if the symbol is a swastika? Or maybe a cartoon of mohammed?

Or along the same line of thought:

I've never been able to understand how a word can be of so much importance. If the word simply stands for something else, what does it matter?

Even if the word is n*****? or ***got? or Wealth redistributing communist?(ok that's like three words but same meaning)

Don't tell me you've never thought of it in that way.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I don't deny it. Sure, symbols are for the symbol minded but when a veteran remembers a day when a flag was hoisted up on a hard fought for battlefield surely it is more than just a rag to them. I'm no veteran but I respect the flag because of what it stands for, not what it is made from. After all, though just a symbol it is our nation's symbol, and I love 'Murica...Or at least what's left of it.

Symbols that represent negative ideas, issues, representations, etc are perceived much differently. Some symbols are certainly endowed with more or deeper meaning.

So it's all about perspective. Don't get your panties in a wad when someone has a differing perspective from your own then.

I don't give a damn about a flag....any flag. It's a flag, nothing more. If I wiped my ass with it behind closed doors who would it hurt? No one.

Also, you probably should not be name calling figures in other people's religion....the Christian god is deserving of some doozies. I know how that offends you.

I don't know why but I am surprised that you don't give a damned about a flag, any flag. That's likely because you don't feel a connection with your country. If someone disrespected you, your family, or your good name, it should make you upset at the very least. I'd hope that you would give a damned and stand up to defend your good name. I take it you would since it's YOUR name. To many that flag is THEIR flag. It is a mere symbol, but there is a connection to it. There is also an unofficial accord to defend, not it's fabric, but what it stands for. It's simple Americana 101. If you don't give a damned, it's because you truly have lost the most basic concept of patriotism. I'm no chest-thumping uber-patriot myself, but I do recognize and extend my respect where it's due.

Sure, and I get that too. It's simply interesting how value is assigned, and how there is an attachment to the symbol itself. Certain symbols incite some level of emotion in me as well. It's human, and it's a reminder that humans are pretty simple organisms.

I don't care enough about someone else's opinion of my families name to get all worked up about it. What does it solve? What's the prize? What do you gain? Meh.

Patriotism is nearly as dangerous as religion. I have none.

The swastika was the equivalent to Nazi Germany. It was not a negative symbol to THEM as the American flag is not negative to those of us who TRULY love this country and what it was founded to be. Those who see the flag as "just a symbol" have a shallow understanding of real patriotism. I served in the army because I believed in the greatness of the US. I served under Reagan(I would rather desert than to serve under the buffoon on office now).

As for mohammed cartoons. They must, in some way equate to them as our flag does to us. So since they love to burn our flag I say doodle away.

Hell, if you won't stand up for yourself, then I doubt you would stand up for anything.

Both are manifestations of loyalty, of which I am certain you also have none.

I very much appreciate facets of the US, I also realize there are area that are lacking compared to other countries. It's a pretty logical way to observe. Patriotism is akin to "faith" in christianty, and I don't subscribe to the concept at all.
