Every oyster from the Cheaspeake Bay south through the Gulf of Mexico is infected with it. It is in the same family as cholera.
Learned this working on a project with oysters, and it has made me cautious about going in the water in the summer with my old man legs. They are always leaking somewhere.
Still eat oysters on the half shell - unless you have some known susceptibility, you are probably o.k. Diabetics are really at risk.
