For all those living with GERD or acid reflux. Is it too much acid or not enough? Either vinegar or antacid pills.

You need to find the root cause and what ever you do, don’t take anti-acid meds. Your gut needs acid for many things above and beyond just digesting your food. It kills bacteria, parasites and anti-acid meds also robs your body of many needed nutrients. I can go on but many here stuck in the “pill for every ill” mentality may get their feathers ruffled.
Waiting for your input as I really do want to hear it.

mine bothers me more when I have stuff on my mind. Used lots of over the counter items and lots of homeopathic. Not much relief there.
Sleep sitting up helps me.
I believe if I could lay off the coffee and alcohol lot of my problems would go away.

Just curious what the ODT thinks?
FWIW, I suffered GERD and reflux and then got a paraesophageal hernia. I was in the operating room for ten and half hours. My stomach had been pushed up through my chest cavity and it forced my heart into my ascending colon and all of that ultimately rested on my lung. AFTER the surgery I still got GERD, reflux and then IBS with diarrhea. I went to over 210 pounds and if I were any shorter, I'd be a midget... so 210+ was FAT. Numerous doctors and no relief.

Then I got a perforated colon. This stuff can magnify many times over. In the hospital I had one gastroenterologist wanting to take out part of my colon; however, some research turned up better alternatives and another gastroenterologist agreed that a non-surgical remedy should be employed. He told me, despite the constant trips to the bathroom to get on Metamucil. I do the Kroger brand as it is the easiest to swallow. I got off most of the meds on that alone, but still had the other problems. Now the solution:

Others have told you about the diet. No refined sugar, no bread, no sodas, tea, coffee (or caffeine of any kind). Stay away from spicy foods, fast food, fried food and even watch the fruits and vegetables you eat. Corn is bad for your digestive system and potatoes along with rice are not healthy choices. Stay away from processed foods. Avoid the acidic fruits. Most of your diet (at least 85 percent) should come from the meat, dairy, vegetable, and fruit aisles. I never shop the aisles in stores.

I work out every other day in the gym for two hours. Get at least seven hours of sleep and work toward eliminating stress. Sleep with your head elevated; they make a wedge shaped pillow and you may need a smaller pillow to go on top of the wedge as the wedge is very firm (may as well put your head on a rock unless you have something soft under you). Do all your eating within a 14 or so hour window. After my last meal of the day, I allow 16 hours before eating again. LIMIT calories every day.

I've lost over 40 pounds and am off all medicine except for the Metamucil that I take once every other day. It is a total lifestyle change, but it has been well worth it. No medicine can take the place of you getting your body in the best possible shape.

The main reason I have it is I'm fat. Well, I'm average these days, but average these days is fat. The second reason is all the driving I do. It squeezes and sloshes.

If you'll cut the soda, alcohol, caffeine, acidic foods, spicy foods and wear looser fitting clothing you may be able to go without pills. I have a small cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of tea at dinnertime. Water is all I drink otherwise.

My wife is not a fan of the overalls, but whatever, I don't have to take any pills for it. If I don't do what I need to do, then it's either take pills or have heartburn so bad I feel like I'm having a heart attack all the time. (If you feel like that, you better have your heart checked. I did.)

One trick I found is Benadryl before doing something that will aggravate it. Say if you know you're going snorkeling or anything that involves bouncing around and being face down and horizontal (I'm setting the ODT tards up for a joke here) then take a couple benadryl the night before. I guess it reduces the inflammation. IDK, but it helps without having to use a prescription medication.

One trick I would like to try is a wedge pillow or adjustable bed to sleep with my chest elevated. If it gets to where watching diet isn't enough, I will buy the bed.

Getting skinny would probably fix it, tho.

Discovering the cause is vital.

In my case, I was on Mounjaro until about a month ago. Had been for a while. It was working -reasonably well, but one of the side effects can be reflux. I'd wake up in the morning with a n ass taste in my mouth that I didn't think could possibly be acid reflux, and then, over the course of a couple of DAYS, dental erosion became evident. Turns out I had low-grade GERD. Now I have to deal with a bunch of dental work. But I count myself lucky that I know what the cause is.

There's no doubt that water brash is acidic. It's stomach acid. The issue is why it's there. See a gastroenterologist, and get advice from him, not a bunch of dusty fudds on the internet.

If you're having other gut problems like sensitivity to spicy or greasy food, it could be your gall bladder. THATS an easy test too, and it's surprising how many people have gallstones. It's an inconvenience until you get a blocked bile duct. Then it's bloody murder.
