That's messed up. I'm glad I got my license approved before they made you jump through hoops like that.

My dad is a vet and enjoys using his veterans card for discounts with various stores and the large big box stores. So for Christmas I got him a gift card from home depot, he's a do it yourself guy and not afraid to tackle any job (he's retired at least 10 years). So back to the gift card, he tells me home depot won't accept the military ID card, they say it's expired. So he tells the manager every other store takes his card and he gets a discount. But not HD.

So my question is, how can he get a new card? Preference being online! But any route is accessible. Thanks in advance.

All he’s got to do is go on Any military installation and go to the ID card section and get a new ID. Let me caveat this by saying he needs to go onto the base his website wherever he’s going to go and look up the requirements for him bringing in ID verification prior to setting up the appointment. If his ID card is expired they may need him to bring in additional documents proving it’s him.

It's unlikely he can even get on a base.

Here's the skinny on Vet ID cards. https://www.va.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic/

I just got the Veteran brand added to my DL last time, just had to show my DD214, which I pulled from my cloud storage via my phone standing at the counter. YMMV.

HD is entirely store dependant. My local HD now offers to match Lowes everyday 10% Vet discount. They only started doing that in the last year or so, I believe they were catching a lot of flak. None of the discounts generally apply to any sale items and certain exempted products. I prefer Lowes in general anyway, I just give my phone number (as can my wife or son) and a plus is they have Vet parking up front as well. They do often ask for ID because people are trying to game their generosity by having 7th cousins, etc. - relatives that do not live in the household - use the discount.

My local beverage store changed ownership and also gives me 10% on any non-sale item.

I don't expect the discounts or go out of my way to get them everywhere, but appreciate them when offered, and if it will save me a significant amount, I ask.

Green ID is Active Duty (or used to be)
Red ID is Guard or Reserve
Blue ID is Retired Veteran
Brown ID is for dependents

If he has a blue retired veteran ID card and it is expired, you need to contact the Mission Support Squadron at Dobbins ARB.

You can't do it online. It has to be in person. I recommend making an appointment. Retired ID cards are dated to expire when you're eligible for Medicare. It changes the medical care eligibility on the card.
