My oldest started on the BB gun when he was 5. He got his own Red Ryder when he was 7.
He shoots BB gun still, 22 pistol with me. His brother is about ready for his own RR.
Both boys know they can ask at any time to look at my guns. I try to take mystery out of guns for them.

This. Education is key and the relationship is important. When I was little my dad told me if I ever wanted to look at them or mess with anything to come and ask him and he’d do it with me. He told me if he ever heard or saw me doing anything with them without him that relationship was over. I enjoyed that we had something in common so much I never would have ruined that relationship before I could ever truly grasp the concept of firearms safety. It took the mystery away and was never something that made me feel like I was being bad or sneaky because I could enjoy it openly with him.
Speaking of the above there's a new HK 416 22 that looks like an awesome first youth rifle
