Interesting and so true

Why the increase in explosive wildfires?
The summer of 2003, while serving as a Boy Scout Forestry merit badge counselor, I took three of our scouts to a National Forest Ranger Station in Northern California to interview a forest ranger. We were ushered into a high-ranking ranger office where all four walls were covered with bookshelves filled with thick binders floor to ceiling. The ranger sadly explained that he spent three-quarters of his time dealing with injunctions that environmentalist groups have filed against logging companies to keep them from going into the forest to harvest dead trees. Pointing to his walls, the ranger quipped that the binders were filled with all the injunctions.
The ranger detailed for the scouts that the environmentalists tie up the logging companies in court for so long that eventually, the trees become full of beetles and no longer profitable to harvest and then the injunction is dropped. He said it will now cost billions of dollars to clean up the forests, whereas, if the loggers were allowed in, they could clean up the forests and generate a revenue stream for State and National Forests.
The ranger, while shaking his head, indicated that the environmentalists have been doing this for years and are hurting the forests as it has caused an extraordinary number of dead trees in the forests. He explained that this not only provides more tinder for catastrophic crown fires (vs. healthy and regularly occurring creeping fires which clean out the forest floor), but also attracts bark beetles which causes the trees to die. The ranger further explained that because of environmentalists not allowing for controlled burns in populated areas and fire suppression in wilderness areas that a disastrous situation has been created in the forests.
He glumly predicted that when not if, a major fire gets out of control in the Tahoe basin, that it will be explosive with fast-moving fires with large loss of life since there are only three major ways in and out of Lake Tahoe area.
Bottom line, the devastation we are seeing in CA right now is man-made…by the leadership of your environmentalist groups and their fellow traveler friends in government…NOT the myth of global warming.

In addition to this article, don't forget the homeless idiots who start so many of the fires, and allahpuked who have admitted they are using them to wreak havoc/terror here...

Scientific data to back up the rangers claims?

Doubtful as there have been numerous studies indicating no relevance to beetle population explosions before or after fires to an extent that it would exacerbate the fires

If one had actual knowledge of just how difficult it is to manage a controlled burn in these areas you describe then it would seen that the theory here is in fact unfathonable to predict the desired intent without having a fire escalate into an unmanageable situation

I just love how many seem to have actual fire-fighting experience in these areas.Even here in Ga,especially the mountains they are seldom if ever utilized due to the concern of them becoming unmanageable

Controlled burning is an acceptable practice in areas that are and can be deemed manageable, but the mountains and valleys of the northwest pacific and other areas prone to high winds and difficult terrain usually make efforts impossible to control or predict, nice try tho conflating the 2 by using your ranger analogy even tho it is very weak.

FWIW I worked for the Florida Forestry Service runnin a D-5 for several yrs in my youth cutting breaks and have a lot more knowledge than Nugent has in his whole body regarding fire suppresion in my right hand. We did controlled burns on a regular basis, but then again it is flat and easier to maintain

If one doesn't have the intellect to see the correlation between the warming trends and expanded growth patterns of beetles over the yrs then they are doomed to see these situations happening, even here in Ga. the pine beetle population is growing and expanding, but they spray and deforrest areas that are subject to infestation with little use of fire as a inhibitor as there is no known correlation between the 2,smh

I think it's funny that all the nuts out there are making raking jokes. The intelligentsia and academics think they are smart ridiculing the Presidents comments. He was right however....Not necessarily with "raking", but a fuels reduction plan is needed. Using controlled burns or fuels reduction programs go a long way. When you have 4 feet of duff and tinder and dead dry limbs, you are looking at nice hot fires that will destroy everything in their path.

The issue regarding forest management is not beetles, spotted owls or global warming. The issue in California is environmental groups pushing an agenda that values plants, animals, brush and dead trees over human beings and their property. I originally come from Northern California and I have family that have lived there all their lives to include my stepfather who had a 30yr career with the National Forest service in CA. He was the head Ranger for the Los Padres National Forest and the Lands and Minerals Officer for the Klammath National Forest. He has fought many fires in CA and been called in to direct efforts to fight those fires. Californians and foresters there know what the problem is and how to fix it, but the environmental groups are the ones preventing them from doing so and that's a fact. Environmentalist don't want brush or trees cleared because they claim it damages habitat. All of those dead trees and habitat providing brush also create a lot of dry fuel to burn out of control. Here is a 2010 article about this subject and nowhere in it is global warming mentioned. http://www.californiachaparral.org/...safety_faces_a_battle_FINAL_with_Comments.pdf

For those that say the forest service clear cuts entire forests I say you are a liar. The forest service plant 6 trees for every tree they cut.

"All of those dead trees and habitat providing brush also create a lot of dry fuel to burn out of control."

Yes they do,and why are they dieing? ,global warming in part caused by poor forestation practices globally, not just here but elsewhere as well.I agree about the clear cutting,to my knowledge that hasn't been practiced since I was a kid in the 60's,but over the span before and even today in certain areas it does go on without enough conservation efforts to replant as much as they used too in part primarily because of cuts in their funding passed by pretty much all the past and current administrations.

We can change it with good soil conservation practices and better air quality and emmission standards, but not under the current admin. which doesn't believe what scientist, foresters and rangers have been saying for yrs.

It's not just environmental groups that are seeing the trend, the scientific community has the evidence, yet it falls on deaf ears because to many its all about the GAD rather than the survival of the human populace

Perhaps we should buy more wind turbines that are produced in China and with huge RE magnets that come from unregulated Chinese mines. Or buy more solar panels that are made in China with materials that come from unregulated mines. Electric cars with magnets coming from those same mines. Huge lithium batteries.... again coming from China. These "green" devices are causing MUCH more harm than good while padding the pockets of big corporation CEOs and government puppets.

Science is not a democracy. A thousand scientists who are PAID MILLION$ and have an agenda, do NOT vote for "settled science". Any real scientist is always up for debate and welcomes new theory or "popular theory". In real science it only takes ONE person to find the truth. Anyone who claims that "science is settled" is not a scientist at all. They are either political activist or paid lap-dogs.

I'm still waiting for the polar ice caps to be melted by 2013 (That one made a lot of people VERY rich). Can you please explain to me at how man-made global warming caused the ice to melt at the end of the last Cenozoic Ice Age?

Why buy from China when we can produce it ourselves,Thats a real nice defeatist attitude ya got there, blame it on China, smh.

Man wasn't even around in that period, cause's are unknown because mankind wasn't here yet according to science.Yet we still have folks believing the earth is flat and trying to blame China for everything that we should all be working towards a safe environment for mankind.

BTW,In case you haven't been paying attention most if not all of the icecaps on our planet are melting, checkout Greenland,Antartica,Artic Polar Ice caps that are shifting and shrinking now more trhan the last 2 centuries
