Item Description: Hello All,

I have a Ruger M77V 7.62 NATO Heavy Barrel Sniper Rifle that was born in the late 70's and was used in active duty by the person I purchased it from over 20 years ago. The question I have is.. does the fact that it has a history make it any more valuable? Now I know what you will say... only if the person buying it thinks so. :)

It is in very good shape and has a Weaver T10 Duplex Reticle Optic and has had 886 rounds sent down range. I got this from a gentleman who shall remain anonymous, however I have seen him in several books about the first UDT teams in Vietnam. My brother worked with him, and after several conversations, I have no doubt that what he has documented about the rifle is accurate.

He included a hand written card that has all the information above plus the types of ammo that shoot well, and the effective ranges as well as the maximum active duty ranges. It also has a note about the longest casualty producing shot that resulted in a fatality.

I know that when I got this, all of that stuff seemed very interesting and kind of cool. I still kind of think that.. however I would love others opinions about it.

Thanks in advance

P.S. The price is just a goof... I know it is not worth that much.

If that rifle was made in the late 70's it did not go to Vietnam, The next small conflict was Grenada in 83. What is a comparable Ruger without the story worth ? Used on active duty to do what ? It is going to take more than a good story to make it valuable. It is going to take a file folder of documentation. Property marked ? What history does it have ? It belonged to a UDT guy is not nearly enough to add any real value. I have seen Green Beret owned firearms in pawnshops at Ft. Bragg. The former owners did not add value.

Born in the late 70's puts it after the fall of Saigon in '75. Not sure what the story is, but suspect.

Ok.. All good points. As I said, I am not really looking to sell the rifle. I think you are all correct. I looked up the serial number and got the born on date in 1977. I know it was not in Vietnam, I think only the Iranian hostage thing would be in the wheelhouse. At least for known operations. As one person said, if I do decide to sell, I will sell it for what it is, and include the story for a good time.
Thanks to all for the comments.

P.S. - I did put a couple of rounds down range with it and it is still very accurate, even with the number of rounds fired. He noted that the longest range used was 977m and that the optimum range was 400m-650m. The longest casualty producing shot was at 850m.

Or did they? ...Robot!

That’s my point…those are my “war stories.”

In reality, they were 40-80lbs we only found 30 and struck several. Lol….

I call BS on a lot of escapades…especially if they wrote a book on it. I sound jaded sorry everyone.
