Merry Christmas, ODT friends! So for Christmas my domestic CFO (which is the best kind of CFO to work for because I can tell her she has a nice rack yet not get in trouble with HR) gave me permission to get one of the Hatfield SGL’s from Walmart for $104 out the door in Acworth. Very pleased with the quality for the price when compared to my NEF SB1 (which I like too). Decided to incorporate this firearm into into my preps as a dedicated vehicle long gun. Here are the specs...

12ga / 3in chamber

19.75 in barrel (interesting that the chromium content of these barrels is so high that from the factory the end of the barrel is raw and unblued, so cutting down barrel does not require touch up blue)

20” OAL folded (fits into a Nike Brasilia gym/sports sackpack for urban camouflage, no one wants to steal dirty gym clothes)

Allen brand snap on, low profile fiber optic front sight

Forearm modded to allow more compact folding

Allen shotgun buttstock ammo sleeve with 10 rds of Aguila mini slugs (can fit 3 more into buttstock receiver bolt tube under butt plate if desired too)

Receiver gold color fill to keep it classy

Trigger/hammer work (can lighten pull significantly and still have reliable
primer ignition by adjusting action leaf spring tension screw)

All in all, in this project for only $150! I enjoy a cheap build that turns out well.

I was just looking at these on Gunbroker. They're cheaper at Walmart though. If I get my hands on one I'll do exactly what you did here. Taking the extra inches off the barrel makes a much more compact handy package.

May you have a long & glorious Employment with a CFO that approval is required for triple digit purchases.

Thanks, I saw some builds on YouTube (many thanks to the folks who created the content to inspire my build) and remembered when these came out few yrs back. Thought I would see if Walmart still sold them, thinking “probably not”. Not only was I surprised to find out they do still sell them, but that they have these in .410 and 20ga on hand as well. Here was the key: Walmart has a lot more inventory in the back than they have on display. For example, my location only had a 20ga out on display, but when the clerk checked the inventory on the computer the 12ga and .410 were boxed up in the back.

I also found it depends on the clerk you talk to. At my location, there was one young man who knew guns and was happy to help that day. But the sporting goods manager and the store manager who escorted me to the front with the gun after checkout were less than happy that they had to help with a gun sale (like it was a hassle for them). I will say the process was more easy than I thought for a mega company like Walmart. All the 4473 paperwork was done online complete with electronic signature. And just like other gun shops my GWL allows them to skip doing a traditional background check call to the ATF.

All in all, from the time I asked “Do you have a Hatfield SGL single shot shotgun in 12ga?” til the time I walked out the front door to leave was 30 min or so. I would rate it as a “good” experience vs the “great” experience of Cherokee Gun or TruPrep. Walmart has Henry H001s for good prices too and will probably look into buying one of those from them next.

I know exactly what you mean . I was in the Brunswick Wal-Mart twice last week and both time Grandma Moses was running the counter back there. I kept hearing her tell customers she didn't know about a caliber and or scope in a rifle and could not look it up. When I walked by I told the frustrated looking people "Just go to Academy. WAY less aggravating. " But yeah I knew they had 20 and 410 available . I'm not big on 410 mostly due to the cost of the shells. But I might give 20 gauge a shot.
I've watched the same YouTube videos on the Hatfield you did. One guy cut it down and took some heavy gauge wire like a welding rod and made a loop that stuck into the rear of the stock. Then he made a little notch in the vent rib near the muzzle for the wire look to catch in. So his shotgun stayed folded in the backpack. I think he also inletted a slightly larger area in the forearm so the trigger guard fit into it when folded and it folded up tighter.
It's probably the best deal you're gonna get in a single barrel these days. When I worked sporting goods at Roses in 89/90 we sold milsurp rifles and they were on sale every Sunday , It never bothered me to go get 3 or 4 greasy ass Mosins or Enfields to give the customer their choice of rifles. Just took patience and lots of paper towels.
