Bought a grey ghost precision g17.3 slide and kit (brownells). Put everything together but the new slide won’t completely close on the lower when rounds are loaded. Empty everything cycles fine.

Looking from the side it looks like the frame is slightly “bent” up in the very front and making contact with the slide and providing just enoigh friction to not go the last 1/4” into battery. Usually a slight push with the thumb and it goes the rest
Of the way. I assume between the extra friction of a round and the frame in front it’s just enough to stop the slide the last 1/4”. Tried my reloads, factory ammo and snap caps. All stopped. All rounds pass the “plunk test”.

Anyone seen anything similar before??

Thoughts on how to correct it?

That contact is pretty common and doesn't affect functioning 99% of the time.

My questions are "What recoil spring is in the gun?" and "Is the barrel fit pretty tight?".

Glocks are generally pretty over-sprung, so it should be able to run despite this contact. Get the Recoil Spring down to 13# or so and it may have issues.

Barrel feels pretty loose. I only have the G22 slide to compare it to.

I have had the G22 for many years, and have a 9mm conversion barrel for it. Decided to buy a G17.3 slide that was milled to put a red dot on it and a threaded barrel (both from Grey Ghost precision). Both were new and I used a Brownells slide completion kit to finish it out (the glock stuff seems to be out of stock most places and I needed to order some other brownells stuff).

Maybe I just need to run some rounds through the upper and break it in. I'll maybe try the OE spring from the G22 slide and see if that helps.

That'd be my vote. The Recoil Spring Assembly marked 5579-1 is the OEM spec for both the G17 and the G22, so it should work.

A recommended test is to pull the trigger on an empty chamber, then pull the slide to the rear and hold it. Point the gun straight up to the sky and slowly let the slide go forward. The slide should close fully under spring pressure, overcoming the resistance of gravity and the Firing Pin Spring. If it does close fully, it is presumed that the RSA has enough tension for normal operation.

I swapped the OE g22 spring in today and same issue with the slide not closing on a round. Tried the snap cap, reloads and factory ammo.

Now that I know how to disassemble the slide parts next week I’ll swap the internals from the two slides and see if one of them is causing the hang up.

Try a different barrel—and mag—just to be sure-it may not be the slide to frame contact.
This is my guess. I would take a close look at the grooves in the slide; they may be machined poorly (rough finish on the inside), or could have too much coating in them and dragging on the frame guides.

The gun ran fine before, so always check the last part changed out - the slide.

If everything looks good then lube the heck out of the slide rails and see what happens.

update on the slide issue:
I started swapping parts from the G22 slide into the new slide. BUT the first thing I noticed after I had a hard time getting the extractor plunger out is that one of the optic screws must be just a touch too long and was interfering with the extractor. I would bet this was what was causing the hang up on the slide.

just to check though, I swapped the parts from the G22 to the new slide and it works fine. Also putting the new parts into my G22 slide, and it worked fine as well.

so I'll start looking around for an OE glock slide kit but in the mean time, things seem to be working on both slides. I'll take it to the range this week and work both of them and see how they go and break in the new slide.

Now for my follow up question - what's the best way to shorten one of the optic screws? or just buy the right length screw (or dig through the ones that came with the optics and see if there's on that's a bit shorter). I've got Trijicon and Holosun optics but I've read where the shape/angle of the hole in the optic is slightly different and not a good idea to swap screws between the two?

You can -at your own risk- thread a nut onto the screw far enough that the part you want to cut off is protruding through the nut. Grind or file off the extra-a vise or vice grips on the nut should hold it. Once finished remove the nut slowly with some back and forth action to straighten out the threads on the end.

The file is safer, since you could get yourself hurt if you slip your hand into the grinder.

Or:

Be patient and Just get some shorter screws.
