Our great nation was founded on the belief that every individual has certain inalienable rights and liberties. The Constitution identifies these rights however it does not grant them to us, it simply acknowledges their existence. They are inherent to us as human beings. The Second Amendment guarantees us the right to keep and bear arms so that as individuals we would have the tools necessary to defend ourselves from those who would forcibly trample upon our other rights. Our country has enjoyed 237 years of freedom and because of this we have become somewhat complacent. We often speak of tyranny and oppression in hypothetical terms however we must realize that these are very valid threats to our freedom and they cannot be taken lightly.
Our political opponents have wasted no time in exploiting a national tragedy to further their idealistic agenda. The swiftness with which they have attacked our rights can leave no doubt as to what their true intentions are. This is not a crusade for the safety of our children. It is an underhanded attempt to completely strip the American people of their right to self defense. This was once the subject of conspiracy theories and radical right wing rhetoric but it is now very real. In the near future we may find ourselves standing on the precipice of liberty staring into the abyss of tyranny.
Nobody wants to be put in this position. We live good lives with families and children and we are understandably reluctant to seriously consider such drastic possibilities and dire consequences. However our founding fathers were real people too and they faced the same uncertainty and trepidation. They risked everything they had so that we may know freedom and prosperity. For us to do nothing is to refuse their gift and dishonor their sacrifice.
We have been called upon to have a national conversation on guns but instead we have been met with furious demands and ultimatums. It is imperative that we counter these attacks with intelligent and coherent arguments. Our opponents are masters of slander and they will waste no opportunity to paint us as radical extremists. Right now our best weapons are the power of our words and the strength of our arguments. However, we too have our ultimatums. Our right to bear arms is not negotiable and it will not be surrendered.
Thus we all must take time to reflect on a very serious personal decision. If our words are ignored our rights may be stripped away and we will all become criminals with the stroke of a pen. We all have to contemplate our response to such an action. We cannot condone aggression and every effort must be made to avoid confrontation. I sincerely hope and pray that we are never faced with such a situation. However at a certain point we have a duty as a free people to stand together and collectively say "Molon Labe".
