Get Home Bags...Questions on specs.....Sourcing?

I own a small Safety And Apparel company and am going to start sourcing and selling GHB's.

Wanted to ask this group of elite survivalists about what they like in a bag.

I am going to guess the top 3 needs are -

1. Cost.
2. Weight.
3. Durability.

Other Considerations......

Do you all care where it is made? USA? Canada? Mexico? India? China? Latin America?

(I am going to guess - China would be last. All the others are major textile suppliers and would be fine)

Color? - Tan- Black- Digital Camo?

Weight - >1-3 LBS? Total? Unloaded?

Do you like MOLLE Systems?

Size? Small- Med Large?

Material? Nylon Cordura? Canvas?

My goal is to keep this EXTREMELY simple.

THANK YOU !!!!

The bag depends on the mission. Someone's need for a GHB will be different if they live in Cartersville and work in Calhoun vs lives in Decatur and works in midtown. While you said you are trying to keep it simple, I think you need to do some market segmentation. Like small, medium, large. Or urban GHB vs country GHB.

I totally agree with keeping the looks "average" not military. Maybe Hello Kitty licensing? Just kidding of course.
Where you source the bag obviously depends on how you price it. You don't have much of a choice if you are trying to sell on price, will probably be Asian. If you are going for quality, USA made carries a lot of weight but it will be pricier.

Probably go with a Medium sized bag to start. Black. Nylon. Main Pocket. 2 Side pockets. 1 extra outside pocket in on top of the main. Looks like a day pack.

I'm open to empirical evidence that leads one to come to the conclusion that one is more of a target than the other.

Hahaha. Are you looking for a randomized trial adequately powered for the standard deviation published in a peer reviewed journal? I think I just saw one comparing 800 denier cordura vs 1000 denier with multiple arms for bags sourced in Malaysia vs Vietnam with a regression analysis of plastic vs metal zippers......

You realize this is the ODT right? Lotsa opinions with little fact.

Wanted to ask this group of elite survivalists about what they like in a bag.

I am going to guess the top 3 needs are -

1. Cost.

For the bag i'd like to stay under $60. A GHB is for 72-96hrs and shouldnt be too big

2. Weight.

2-3lbs

3. Durability.

What do you mean? Straps should be re-enforced, good quality buckels and if anything ykk zippers. The bag absolutely needs a carry handle, and a re-enforced bottom

MUSTS

  • hip belt (doesn't needed to be padded for a lighter bag)
  • pouch for hydration bladder
  • padded shoulder straps.
  • internal storage, and a top and back pocket. Not two big pockets you just throw your **** in and have to rifle through it to get what you need
Do you all care where it is made? USA? Canada? Mexico? India? China? Latin America?

No. QC determines everything

Color? - Tan- Black- Digital Camo?

Digital camo is ****, blue, OD, Coyote, maroon

Do you like MOLLE Systems?

Not at all. You have to buy pouches which adds to cost. Consider some verticly mounted nylon webbing done like molle to lash thing to the pack (see bedroll)

Size? Small- Med Large?

1500-2K CI is the sweet spot for a 3 day bag

Material? Nylon Cordura? Canvas?

No go on canvas.

that molle comment is just ignorant.

Any bag can be a valuable target, but if you see one with molle on it...

You know it's not a hillary voter carrying it. It's gonna have some goods.

Ghb=medium size light as possible

Bob= whatever you can carry 5-20 potential miles a day

I am not a fan of molle. Too inviting and even the libs know who carries it

I think people would be just as likely to steer clear of ppl carrying "tacticool" bags, knowing they are a harder target.

I welcome and challenge you to provide empirical evidence rather than simple conjecture, just as the previous poster suggests.

If you are interested in carrying bug out bags see if you can carry kifaru. Pricey as heck but the quality is unmatched in my opinion. I have their Zulu pack for a long term bug out scenario but would really love to get more modular with their scout. Problem is its too damn expensive to order just to try out without seeing and feeling it. Would love to have a local retailer where I could actually try on a pack and see the pouches next to the bag so I can buy what I actually need without the expensive gamble.

Those are nice and definitely Bug out bag material, but for a get home bag it may be overkill depending on the amount of distance till you get home.

I was specifically responding to this statement.

"that molle comment is just ignorant.

I hear and see that type of thought a lot but with no facts to back it up. Too many folks spend too much time repeating derp on the interwebz. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but I don't think it's out of line to ask for proof.

Thanks for the input.

Staying under $60 is easy if using imported bags. USA made they are not cheap.

I agree with most of your statements.

Probably wont go with Molle Systems.

(I have a US Full Size ruck and its covered in straps. Kind of annoying. )

My Ideal usage would be for 2-3 days. I have lived out of a corporate type back pack for 3 days on the road no problem.

I am thinking this would be for weather related emergencies more than anything else. ( God forbid)

I do love Canvas but its not ideal. Nylon works well and has been proven to hold up.

I HATE to many pockets. Just looks like a mess.
