What is the average commute in Atlanta? 20 Miles? I have to imagine you could drive half that in snow and ice before it go so bad you had to walk the last 10. Agree? Disagree?

@Survivor Johnny - I walked 7 in the snow in 2013 when we had total SHTF for 12 hours.

Once again personal experience, I'm usually 50 miles from home and at times around 100.
 
Really should look at some of those Jansport bags. I have well made low profile one with waist strap and bladder pocket. And it holds more stuff than I want to carry. For example look at Jansport Odyssey in green at $100.

Great thread. What type of stuff would you put in a GHB? I'm thinking paracord, poncho, extra socks flashlight, extra batteries, canteen. I know I'm missing a lot.

Spare socks
Underwear
Thermals, wool scarf and watch cap in winter.
Enoigh food for 4 days. I have a mix of MRE's and freeze dried as well as some power bars and coffee.
Water filter
Water bottle
Small cooking pot
Spare flashlight
Spare headlamp
Spare folding knife
IFAK
SOL emergency blanket
Candle lantern
Fire making stuff.
I also have an old hammock that I waterproofed for over head cover/fire reflector.
Paracord

Others may have different or more extensive lists. I left some things out but this might give you a good idea of where to start.
