Getting in shape for summer... who's in?

I'm 48 now, broke my back in 2000, been surgery after surgery, was infected with HepC during one and was blessed to get the new Solvaldi 6 month treatments 1 year ago this month with success, had a spinal fusion 6 months before that with success, just got my spinal infusion pain pump and spinal catheter removed last Sept with success.
I'm back !

Actually, the timing is a coincidence at best. I have always been a health conscious active guy. I love the outdoors and mountain biking. I've always been in to fitness and spent years as a martial arts instructor and fought in a circuit for a short time. When we moved out here my entire life changed and I didn't recognize the physical effects until I was too far gone. It took me months to accept it and I finally had enough when I saw our Christmas pictures. I started the day after Christmas.

Dude, you sound like me. I started studying martial arts when I was 10 and did so until I was 25. I started lifting weights at 13 or so. Ran track in high school too. When I was in college I was a martial arts instructor and trained about 3 times per week and weight lifted about 4 days per week. Every meal I would eat until I felt like I was going to throw up then keep eating some more and I was 7.7% body fat. If I had to guess I'm probably around low 20's% now. I'll check that soon though. Like I said, I'm a has-been. This is week three for my wife and I hitting the gym, so I'm excited about that.

Wow man, sorry to hear about all that. Sounds like there's some good progress though. Good for you for keeping at it and hanging in there.

I think focusing on weight loss sometimes is the wrong metric. If you're hitting the weights pretty hard you may actually gain weight as you build muscle. I much prefer body fat % as the best measure of - am I becoming more or less off a slob.
For most, weight loss is the best and easiest way to better them selves. BF% is too advanced for most (at first).

Yea probably true. BF% reduction only takes a little more knowledge and different kinds of training than simply reducing body weight altogether. But that's one of the benefits of this thread. People can ask questions and learn.

I think people need to be careful with those body fat analyzer scales. They are horribly inaccurate and can vary wildly based on humidity, wet skin, callous feet, body hydration etc...

im up to about 14 or 15 pullups now

started last year at around 5 or so. its amazing how fast you can get your body to adjust

now i need to run more and hike more, my endurance is ****. also need to stop eating after 10:00pm or rather right before bed, its bad for me
