Global Gmail / Google outage on Dec 14

Nevermind that Gmail and all other Google services had a global outage on 12/14, what I found funny was this part of it:

"The Google errors on Monday had an additional ramification for consumers who use its Home service to control smart devices, such as house lights -- numerous users complained on Twitter that they’d been plunged into darkness."

At any rate, I'm glad I quit using all of Google's services years ago.

I wonder if this had anything to do with that emergency upgrade of the DOD secret document network? I read where the DOD shut the network down and did an emergency upgrade in the middle of the day, which had not been done before. They had always done upgrades at night and on weekends up until this point.
