GMC problem

Got a 97 GMC 1500 Got in to go and no shift indicator light than I see a check engine light is on & the tack & speedo do not work & it was shifting funny. Anybody ever had this happen. If so what was it.

any autozone or parts store can scan for free, just don't listen to any of them on advice

I think it is the vehicle speed sensor I will replace it in the AM.

Sounds like it is in limp mode

It's the "please throw me in the trash and buy another GM product (pretty please!)" message.

Gonna be more than limp home mode if the gauges don't work. I would say something in the instrument's wiring harness.

No the gauges oil alt temp & fuel work.

When my alt was going out, my truck started shutting off stuff it did not need to get me home

try cranking the truck then jiggling the key with it running

This^^^^^. Without knowing the trouble codes you will probably waste time and money chasing your tail. And like Lockout said,,,,,,, Don't listen to parts stores for advice.
