I had an open bolt full auto ...for decades.

But I don't understand what happened here.

Wait.... did separating the upper receiver from the lower allow the bolt, which had been held back, to fly forward uncontrolled and slam-fire a round?

I never had to worry about this because my open bolt gun was magazine fed from the bottom. But this is a belt fed thing, with the ammo coming in to the upper receiver directly.
