Going through the 133,975 step process of creating an account on gunbroker and the step that stopped me is where it says ID verification and wants either a passport or divers license. Is this normal? Seems a bit much for a big website.

No, a buyer. I was just trying to create an account because they are the only one that has the smith and Wesson 1911 performance center.
As long as your driver's license is not the same as your social security number (an obsolete practice), there is little risk.
They're trying to prevent duplicate accounts - prevents non-payers from skipping and creating a new account and prevents sellers from pimping their own ads.

Gunbroker doesn't sell guns. They just provide a service of connecting buyers and sellers.
Contact the seller on their who is selling the gun you want directly and see if they'll sell it to you outside of Gunbroker.
As far as your driver's license goes? How cares? They have all my bank account and credit card info too. What they hell does my driver's license matter.
Just seems wrong after years and years of “don’t give online things copies of important info” type of thing.
