I know this is posted all over the odt but, whats the cheapest, hand held communicator. If it's a SHTF scenario, I won't be worried about a license. Just want the ability to communicate with family and friends.

Of course it's made in China though.

50 mile range and handy talkie do not go together

Baofeng Uv5r, add a different antenna. Great radios that are not expensive.

If your "family and friends" are not regular users of a variety of handheld transceivers or walkie-talkies, I say the main thing to look for is IDIOT-PROOF, stupid-simple controls. Every button, every switch, every option on the drop-down menu is another chance for your buddy to change the settings and mess things up.
