Happy Day! AC bought the farm! Whee!

One more thing and this is a BIGGIE, Make sure whomever you choose to do the repairs gives you paperwork for the equipment and that they will handle any and all repairs that may be needed under the warranty. One way I got screwed over was that I bought my system from a supplier locally and they gave me the name of the installer that they use. Everything was great till I started having issues with the air handler and the installer tried to charge me for the labor because I didnt buy the system from him.

So whatcha sellin Mdog?

A kidney and ...oh hey! when your kid hits 20 is it too late to sell him? ;)

Had to be a 3-ton system.

Yep 3 ton:

Trane XR15 split heat pump
3 ton series 7 Trane air handler with variable speed R410A comfort R enhanced mode option(yeah I know what that means...riiiiight)
7 day programmable comfort link thermostat
36x36 3" thick AC pad(my existing pad is 36x24. going to ask him about that charge though. hmmm)
There's an intem on here for "Evacuate/reclaim existing coil and outdor unit. A) Service tech already told me that there's less than a pound of freon so evacuate is mostly moot. and B) should I be charging THEM for the copper? ;)

The work installing the air handler will be a real consideration though since the closet that the existing handler is in is too small for the variable speed handler. The new one will be installed in the attic(will be interesting watching them get it through that 2'x'2 hole in the ceiling) and the ducts will have to be modified. They already run through the attic on the way to the handler so not hugely extensive routing but some. They will also be removing the onld handler from the house so I can convert that into a linen closet.

Dave - the promotion offer was 0% financing or 700 cash rebate. I'm trying to get both. LOL. They did, of course, discount the unit by the $65 for the original service call on the old one. It's a start.

Langford - It's the same company that sells and installs(Jackson Heating and Air in Lagrange). I will be double checking on the warranty/maintenance contract before I sign though. The person I had spoken to about the service call mentioned that they had a service plan for $125 a year to come out spring and summer but wheen buying a new unit I expect to get something like that included for a year to two at least. I'm also a little concerned about "bumper-to-bumper" warranty coverage.

I have a very small window to compare and will be making a few phone calls this morning but I'm leaning hard towards just doing it.

Installers are rarely licensed companies. When you buy the equipment and hire some unlicensed guy to install it, you accept the risk on warranty.

Mdog, unless they have changed the laws in Georgia again you can take the old stuff to the scrap yard and get good money for the copper coils and rest of the metal. When I did mine last year, I had to take the invoice matching my address where I had the new one installed before the scrap yard would buy the old one due to people stealing them. Might be worth a phone call.

Dave, this guy was licensed. He was also the guy that the supplier recommended. I did learn my lesson on that one though, next time I'll buy my system and have it installed by one company and put it on a credit card. That way I will have a little recourse if stuff gets shady. And the estimate, warranty, & invoices all in writing before they are paid. Kind of like the burn me once shame on you scenario.

This is one of the reasons I rarely install customer supplied equipment. It cuts out my markup on equipment and I am expected to warranty it.
