Hey guys! Thinking about build a small chicken coup in my back yard.

We have 11, 3 Roos ( on accident) and 8 layers. We get 6 to 8 eggs a day.

When building any coop, you need to make it predator proof.

We added hardware cloth to the bottom and extra chicken wire wrapped around this. This is a Tractor Supply coop we did last year.

We also added a Harbour Freight tarp for a roof to help keep them dry.

doubles as a playhouse? :) my mom told me when she was a child they would get their chicks in the mail, and she would spend hours in the coop with them.

I did this exact thing. Highly recommend that steel tubular deal from Tractor Supply. I'm down to one chicken, but she roosts in a plastic tub turned sideways elevated up off the ground.

Just when it was being built. They only gather eggs now around the coop. The wife is the chicken tender in the house hold.

have you noticed any fox attempting to dig under? I get them on the cameras but so far have left ours alone

only issue I've had are king snakes. I'm moving soon, and we will re-construct the pen with hardware cloth completely around everywhere to help keep out those dang thieves

We really haven't had signs of or issues with predators. But there coop is close to my range, so weekly gun fire and our dog might be helping with that.

I live in the city now. No predators here LOL but we did have one possum.
i think you ought to get 4 hens and have fun with it. I would come home grab a beer (commute reward from making it home from Smyrna) and watch our neighbors' chickens. It kinda calmed me down. Aint saying a chicken is therapeutic but are fun to watch hunt bugs. So, my wife decided to get some of our own.

Anything you enjoy is therapeutic
