I've gone thru so many holster styles, makers, you name it. I've spent a small fortune, and lost a small fortune, looking for "The One" until I hit on what I like and what works for me. What I've learned:
I tend to move guns...alot. I seldom keep a handgun. I'll buy the new flavor of the month, shoot it, mull it over, sell it. It's a vicious cycle.
So...for "the keepers", I invest in high quality holsters. I don't skimp, I buy once/cry once. My go to holster makers are: Gearcraft (@billieco) for kydex holsters, Tactical Gun Leather (@TKIM) for leather holsters, and N82 Tactical Holsters for my hybrid holsters. Quality, craftsmanship, and customer service cost money.
For the handguns I'm on the fence about, or I know I'll probably eventually sell off, I'll go cheaper. Nothing wrong with that. Why heavily invest in a quality carry system for a gun I'm on the fence about? Trigger coverage and safety are the main priorities at that point, not quality.
I guess, to make a long story short (if it's not too late
), to me, there are different holsters, different tiers of investment, for different roles. My advise: Don't go cheap for the sake of going cheap. When called upon, your betting your life your carry system will perform if called upon. For guns that are keepers or for carry guns: Buy once/cry once, invest in your system, and don't look back. For the occasional range gun or a gun you're probably gonna flip down the line, cheaper is O.K.
The perception of 'value' varies from person to person. At the end of the day, buy what works for you.

because he doesnt have the mold for a new p99. sent me a gen 1 even though i specified. Thats the only offer he gave me. bring in the gun. so im just out one high dollar peice of plastic
You realize that you can easily reform kydex using a heat gun/blow dryer, a towel, and some gloves, right?
Heat it up evenly, stick your gun in, put the towel on it and sit for a min. Make minor adjustments as needed.
Heat it up with the UNLOADED gun it... Slowly... Everything else I agree with.
And I also knew there was more to the story then just drive up there. Am sure there is still more then what has been said...
Lol maybe I should also remind them to breathe while heating it up, make sure to keep your finger off the trigger too. I wouldn't heat the holster up with the pistol in there as it is going to act as a heat sink and make the whole process take longer, insert the pistol after heating.
I don't think the price for higher end kydex holsters is going to stay this high. It's definitely in vogue so I don't blame makers for getting what they can while the getting is good. We're a couple photos of SOF guys wearing horsehide (or whatever) holsters away from another shift in trends.
I'm left handed. I have a box of right handed holsters that always get thrown in to every deal.
