My father in law but a marlin 336 from a salvage shop that came out of the Katrina floods. An ugly beater that was locked up. He brought it to me I managed to take it apart and clean the guts up well and its a good shooter now but still ugly. I was thinking about suprising him and restoring it. Ive redone wood in the past with success, but ive never tried bluing. I was just wondering if any ones has had any success with the home bluing kits. I do have a torch if needed for a certain kit. Thank you for any advice.

I have had some success with bluing and I can tell you that 98 percent of the quality of the final product is based on the prep work before starting. You have to remove 100 percent of any oils, lubes, and rust. Any imperfections will kill the end result of your bluing job.

I've had success with cold blueing. Just one of the packs you get at academy. It is truly 98% prep work. Heating the parts seems to help it take a deeper blue.

Blue wonder is by far the best I have used ,but everyone is right ...prep is 99.9% of the job ..I just about finished a 700 bdl 25.06 spent many hours but it shined like a mirror ,The blue turned out awesome

if the rifle is badly pitted your best option may well be some of the new paints used in place of bluing... the best of these is Cerakote.

you can do it yourself without much issue

If it's really worth the trouble to restore then Google Blind Hoggs custom guns/recipe, he has a homemade recipe for bluing with ingredients from around your home for easy (HOT) bluing, I've used it myself and haven't found a pro that can do any better, it's requires a little work but it's not a waste of time and money, cold blues have never worked for me.
