At the point I discover a malfunctioned weapon my wife will have already neutralized both bad guys with her operable weapon.

I'd use the wife as a buffer since I'd have a better chance to defend myself than her. Maybe she wouldn't get any serious wounds then after the intruder emptied his clip at us I'd attack back.

The thought that someone with a home defense orientation would not have at least one back up weapon available in the bedroom is foreign to me.

Yep. If it is a Glock you could get one of those bayonet things and poke them to death as well haha. Seriously though it would depend on whether or not the second guy came after me or my family. If they did I would reach for another weapon. Could be a knife or another gun close by. If I couldn't I would fight them. Just depends on what that second intruder did. I wouldn't cower in the corner and wait, but I also wouldn't go chasing the guy down the road trying to shoot him in the back.

Along with my pistol and an extra mag I always keep 2 knives on me. Ill shank a mofo. Quick. Or just throw the pistol at you , throw both knives then bust out an AK
