Homeowner shoots 1 of 5 burgerlers and other 4 are charged with his murder

Chances are if nobody died and they would have only received burglary charges. Then they would have became career criminals after that with jail time and criminal record following them. This way it takes them off the street for good.

And who's to say this wasn't their first crime?

Indiana is NOT a duty to retreat state. Jennifer Jack Hole can save that crap for a communist state. It's idiots like her that allowed laws like "Duty to Retreat" to be enacted to assist prosecution of crime victims.

“Burglary is not an inherently violent offense,” argued the attorney, “rarely does a person die during the commission of a burglary. Rarely that should be factored in when you think about what is reasonably foreseeable.” - from the article

And from now on, it should be. It hasn't been foreseeable because criminals usually have the upper hands when targeting victims. Well not on that day, and they should from now on see it as foreseeable. It should be well implied that if you plan to burglarize a home, there is a high probability that you or an accomplice is not going to make it out alive.
