Homeschool Anyone??

Just wondering how many other ODT folks homeschool their kids and why? We gave up a lot several years ago (cable, satellite etc) so my wife could become a stay at home mom and homeschool our kids for many reasons... Didn't like the, for the most part, liberal education that is being taught, didn't want or kids labeled "ADD or ADHD" and medicated, etc. We incorporate everything into our homeschool...gardening, hunting, fishing, shooting, everything we can think of. Anyone else??
Religion, philosophy, morals, etc. There is a good network of home-school families in GA. My kids also attend an excellent CO-OP home-school/prep-school.

We home school our kids since day one. Best thing in the world for us and them. Pm me if you want or need any help. My wife is a home school ninja!!! Hope you get it worked out and good to see lots of home school families on the odt. Oh by the way don't fall for the socialization crap you will get from everyone. Do you want your daughter socializing with you when you were that age? That's how my wife got me on board with it. I never thought of it that way before and she was right again! Again please feel free to contact me if you need any thing!

We homeschool all 7 of ours, always have. The oldest is 13, we have twin 4 year olds at the low end. We have a limited income, but it is that important to us. Compared to other areas of the state, we actually have a pretty good school system, but they are all under the same mandates. We have 1 child that is certified genius, member of MENSA, we have another that has some learning disabilities. I have Asperger's syndrome. We started homeschooling long before we knew any of this, but if can only imagine the treatment of the kids if we had already been in the public system and not sure of how to transition into homeschooling.

All of my boys are involved in scouts, I am an active assistant scoutmaster and NRA instructor running their shooting sports program. EVERYTHING we do is homeschooling. To me, school is preparing for life, so as we live life, we teach.

My wife maintains several blogs, 1 being local homeschool groups and coops, tutors, etc. http://www.homeschoolconnections.blogspot.com/

this is is only southwest ga, Thomasville, Tallahassee, fl groups, but maybe you can find similar groups in your area. May look into veritas academy, classical conversations, etc nod coop groups tho help get you started. There are also tons of online teaching sources such as Kahn academy.

The main think is make the commitment to your kiss and their education, downsize and make budget cuts if you need to. You will be amazed how much 'stuff' you waste money on. Use it as an opportunity to get out of debt, check out Dave Ramsey if you have not already. Homeschooling opens so many possibilities, you may be able to change jobs, live in a less expensive area of the state or mother state. Travel more with the family, have more meaningful, educational vacations, etc.

pm me if you need more assistance, or contact my wife via the website I listed.

And with the new "common core curriculum" standards being implemented in most of our public schools and many private schools as well, there is no time like the present to start home schooling...

Couldn't agree with you more Chris. My friend home schools his 3 beautiful daughters and they are all "social butterflies". There are other ways to have them interact with others, and in their case travel ball and swim team. Some of the local churches in his area offer some home school classes such as choir, band and other group based activities.
My friend home schools his daughter (his wife does that is...), but she plays club soccer and High School soccer. Apparently there are schools that will allow home schoolers to partake in their sports programs.....

What would you guys recommend to a parent that has a 15 year old in 10th grade and a 13 year old in 8th grade? We have always thought about but never acted on home schooling. The main reason was fear of not being able to fully educate them. They both do well in school, in all honors classes. Here lately my oldest and my wife have been taking about homeschool more because my daughter can't stand the kids in school and doesn't feel challenged any more. Where would be a good place to start with programs to use. I'm just concerned it may be too late and if we do take them out that it may hurt rather than help them.

Any suggestions, comments, advise is appreciated.

A lot of private schools have program's where students can come in for certain classes

My child attended a private school K-8. Then he wanted to try out the local Public HS

He is in the International baccalaureate program
And doin very well
And has met lots of new friends , is a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club etc

A lot of it depend on the kid

They have the school near me where the students come in one day a week and take a test
The rest is home study.

I would have loved that when I was in school

Anyway. Ask around . There is a Home school organisation near you

Sometimes they are mostly made up of really weird people though
Depends on the group

Good thread. How much more time is required than you would spend ferrying back and forth to public school and helping with homework/studying after? I work from home and my wife works second shift. Seems like we wouldn't be out much more time.
