A Gwinnett County man was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to eight months in jail for accidental shooting and killing his neighbor while cleaning his gun in his apartment, officials said.

Maxwell Mathews Williamson, 25, of Duluth, was also found guilty of reckless conduct, Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said in a statement. Involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct are both misdemeanors.

A work buddy I shot with told me once that he was cleaning his 10/22 on the kitchen table and his wife objected. He told her it was empty and pointed at the magazine over on the counter.

To prove it he flicked off the safety, pulled the trigger, and shot the dishwasher (the appliance, not the wife).

Needless to say that could have gone a lot worse for him, as this story shows.

I know accidents happen.. but how do you not drop the mag, and clear before you clean... hand to someone.

I mean it's like taking a pis*... you don't forget to unzip and pull it out before you start piss*ng...

My wifey’s rule: NEVER EVER LET YOUR GUARD DOWN! Always deal with it as extremely loaded and dangerous = with care!

I worked with a guy that shot himself in the thigh cleaning his .45. People become far too 'complacent/comfortable' around weapons.

Always play it safe I was a little too comfortable loading guns and chambering a round, I had traded into a highly custom Colt 1911 and as always got home pulled it down to clean it loaded the magazine went to chamber a round the trigger was so light when I let the slide go it fired off a round into the ceiling luckily the round struck a rafter dead center and only damage the sheetrock I didn't repair it I left it as a reminder you can not be too careful.

The one thing my friend had going was that he only broke two of the four rules of gun safety.

It turned out the dishwasher was a pretty good 'safe direction', at least for a 22. If he had been pointing it at a window it could have been a lot more like the article in the OP.
